In October 2019 The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) published the document; “Work-related stress, depression or anxiety statistics in Great Britain” this report states that mental health is the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK; with a staggering 12.8 million working days lost due to work-related stress, depression and anxiety in 2018-19, equating to 54 per cent of the total working days lost to ill health.
These figures do not consider the lost productivity from presenteeism, described as people who are working but struggling with mental health symptoms whilst at work such as poor concentration or lack of initiation.
The simple fact is most of these symptoms can be easily addressed with proactive workplace wellbeing interventions, in fact a recent report for the government demonstrated that these interventions produce a return on investment of up to 5:1.
